| Multimillion-dollar settlement for leaky homes complex
An $11 million settlement has been made in New Zealand's biggest leaky building case so far. The New Zealand Herald reported today that owners of the Sacramento 153-unit development in Auckland's Botany Downs had been poised to begin a nine-month High Court battle to claim $15 million. But Wayne Evans, head of the body corporate owners' committee, said a settlement agreement was struck on December 19. A clause stipulating payment after 30 working days meant the money went into the body corporate's trust account only recently. Mr Evans said an extraordinary general meeting at Sacramento on Tuesday night passed a resolution to devote the entire amount to repairs. The Sacramento complex, built in 1999-2000, was constructed over fibre-cement cladding over untreated timber leading to major leaks and rotting.
Storied 'Gimli Glider' on final approach
The emergency landing in 1983 is etched in pilot Robert Pearson's mind, the moment he pushed firmly on the brake pedals with both feet to slow Air Canada's new Boeing 767 jet after it touched down on an airstrip in Gimli, Man. The plane with 61 passengers and eight crew had run out of fuel around the Ontario-Manitoba border, and for the next 200 kilometres, the airline captain and his first officer, Maurice Quintal, glided the plane without any power. .

A cooking demonstration will take place in the Great Hall, where Sagers, Chef Jim Nadeau and Sous Chef Steve Carlson from Sunnyside Country Club will prepare four dishes, each using Goose Island beers. Samples and pairings will be distributed throughout the demonstration."That's unusual for a cooking demonstration. At most of them, it's usually just the front row or two who gets to sample dishes. I was adamant that everyone have an opportunity to sample the food," says Sager. As they cook, John Hall, founder and president of Goose Island Brewery in Chicago, and a UNI alum, will discuss Goose Island beers and the brewery.Funds raised will benefit the Buck A Kid and Kaleidoscope programs for youth.Participating restaurants include: Galleria de Paco, CU Restaurant, Farradday's at the Isle Casino and Hotel, Montage, Sunnyside Country Club, Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits, Cedar Falls Brown Bottle, Famous Dave's, Indulgence, Hickory House, Gatsby's at the Elks Club, Three Friends Catering, Tony's Trattoria, Doughy Joey's, Waterloo Brown Bottle, Chapala's, Mulligan's, Centennial Oaks Golf Club, Edgewater Golf Club, SAAK's from Waverly, Gourmet Gardens and UNI Catering.Event sponsors are ME&V and Fahr Beverage, with support from Farradday's and Isle of Capri Casino and Hotel, DC Industries, Witham Auto Centers, Young Plumbing and Heating, PDCM Insurance, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Sartori Memorial Hospital, Omega Cabinets, Classic Kitchen & Bath and Smitty's Tire and Appliance.Tickets are $30 for Friends members; $35 for others, available at UNItix locations or by calling 273-4849 or online at www.gbpac.com.Teriyaki Beer Flank Steak 1-1/2 pounds flank steak1/2 cup Goose Island Honkers Ale1/4 cup Teriyaki sauce (recipe below)1/4 cup brown sugar1 tablespoon black pepper seasoning mix1 red bell pepper sliced strips1 green bell pepper sliced in strips2 sweet onions sliced in strips3 tablespoons olive oil2 tablespoons balsamic vinegarTeriyaki sauce:1/2 cup orange juice or pineapple juice1/2 cup soy sauce1/4 cup oil1 teaspoon dry mustard2 teaspoon ginger1 tablespoon brown sugarGround pepperCombine and put in microwave on simmer for five minutes and cool completely and store in a jar.Honkers Bruschetta1 loaf French bread cut into 1/2- inch slices1/3 cup melted butter6 ounces Goose Island Honkers Ale, room temperature1 cup diced plum tomatoes1 clove garlic1/8 cup chopped fresh basilBlack pepper and kosher saltPreheat oven to 400 F.

New component design could reduce cost of proposed Facility for Rare ...
Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energys (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have developed new state-of-the-art techniques that will lead to significant improvements in the performance of superconducting niobium cavities. Argonnes superconducting spoke cavities can operate at lower temperatures and at higher magnetic fields than previous designs, translating into a potential savings in the cost of a heavy-ion linear accelerator, such as that required for the proposed Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). An electromagnetic cavity consists of a space surrounded by an electrical conductor. When an electromagnetic (EM) wave that shares the cavitys natural frequency enters, it bounces back and forth within the cavity, creating a phenomenon known as resonance.
Column: Cats' old foe roars back to playoffs
When Dalton and Atlanta's Carver High squared off in the Class 2A football state championship in 1967, the Catamounts prevailed 14-12 to bring home the title. But both schools had reason to leave that matchup with optimism about their respective football futures.Dalton had gotten the details right in its third title game in four years under Bill Chappell, still in the early days of his long career leading the Cats and obviously building something special.Carver coach Clarence Fisher was relatively new to his position as well, having taken over five years earlier, and the Panthers were going through big changes, too — with racial integration taking hold in high school athletics in the Peach State, they were among the black schools that had been allowed to join the Georgia High School Association just a year earlier.Good things, it seemed, were in store for both varieties of big cat, Catamount and Panther alike. That's not exactly how it went.As most local readers no doubt know, Dalton continued its winning ways.
Gordon's recipe for blandness
It is a hang-out no longer, just another soulless, prissy restaurant with uniformed staff who talk to you as if reciting a training manual. I rang last week to book a table for Monday lunch, the day the restaurant opened. I asked for a table at 1.30pm but was told that it must be 12.15pm or 1.45pm. "But, you are not open yet, how can it be that full?" "There are several other bookings," the girl on the phone replied. After she had finally managed to balance in her head the factors of Monday, two people, Foxtrot Oscar and lunch she asked for a phone number in order to confirm the booking two days before the designated time. This is a business that Ramsay has described as "providing fantastic food in a friendly, unpretentious environment - the ultimate local bistro".

'My Favorite Dog': Dueling Rhymers
No way she was going to allow the man to taste that turkey. It went into the trash. And leftover meatloaf greeted Ken when he returned alone. Holding her breath, Cis told Ken what she did. He laughed and dug into the meatloaf. "And that, Dave," sez Cis, "is why I love this man." Guess the preacher meant tough turkey when he asked: for better or worse? .
