BA pilot feared the worst as he struggled to land plane

THE pilot of the British Airways aircraft that crash-landed at Heathrow said he feared the flight would end in "catastrophe" as he struggled to cope with a double engine failure just two miles from touchdown.

First Officer John Coward, 41, said both engines lost power simultaneously, leaving him with just seconds to bring the aircraft down. He managed to clear the perimeter fence before landing short of the runway with "not just one thud but a series of thuds".

Investigators examining the wreckage of flight BA038 are now focusing on the theory that the crash was caused by a failure in the avionics and electronics systems that control the plane’s engines. British Airways is expected to examine the systems of every aircraft in its 43-strong fleet of Boeing 777s, although the Air Accidents Investigations Branch says there is no need to ground the planes at this stage.

Violence Strangles Party-Town Spirit

It's the bloody battles between police and organized crime that make headlines.

Since Jan. 1, more than 50 people have been killed in the city, some in wild shootouts that terrified bystanders. In January, police discovered an organized-crime hideout near downtown that included a training center for hit men complete with a soundproofed basement shooting range.

Recently, Hacienda Cien Anos, the upscale restaurant that once drew tourists, was identified by U.S. authorities as a front for money laundering.

Downtown has been flooded with police and has been largely free of the violence. No bystanders have been killed in the shootouts. A crackdown on corrupt transit cops has resulted in fewer reports of extortion, and merchants immediately report officers who stop tourists without reason, according to police.

Death by Car Bomb in Damascus

This Wisconsin loss means that Obama's surging momentum will grow even more powerful. New polls showing Obama closing in Hillary's Texas redoubt provide more evidence. The race tilted decisively toward Obama after his wins last week in Maryland, DC, and Virginia.

With this Wisconsin iceberg now slamming into the Clinton campaign, I'm reminded of the scene in Cameron's Titanic where the ship's designer rushes to the bridge, unrolls the construction plans, and informs the Captain that despite the small shudder of the impact and the normal feeling on the bridge, the great ship is doomed. They're unrolling the plans tonight in Hillaryland. They'll be vicious infighting about various desperate Hail Mary plans -- like today's foolish trial balloon about trying to steal committed Obama delegates -- and lots of scapegoating top Clinton campaign officials.

New cookbook features Yellowstone recipes

Perhaps the most unconventional recipe in Bozeman author Durrae Johanek's "Yellowstone National Park Cookbook" isn't really a recipe at all.

It's Joe Mitchell's Fried Trout a la Maytag.Mitchell began working as a "gear jammer," or tour bus driver, in the park in 1947. Over the next 35 years he took summer "leaves" from his jobs with General Motors and Northern Pacific Railroads to don his uniform, grab a bullhorn and lead tours, Johanek wrote. "One time, Joe was asked to take Lady Bird Johnson to the top of Mount Washburn."But the best part of his job was that he could spend every spare minute fishing in the park's blue-ribbon trout streams."Joe says, 'I had a frying pan made from an old Maytag washing machine lid. The aluminum lid was light and easy to carry for cooking (trout) and eating on the spot,' " Johanek wrote.
