A RETIRED dustman let his mentally ill wife starve to death and rot naked in her own excrement for months while he went to the pub and the bookies, a court heard yesterday. The emaciated body of Gillian Pottinger, 61, was found stuck to a couch in her own defecation, flea-ridden with live insects and larva in her hair and weighing just four and a half stones. Her husband, 71-year-old William Pottinger, known as Bill, yesterday admitted her manslaughter in what Judge Christopher Tyrer described as “a truly horrible death". Pottinger discovered his dead wife at her younger brother's home in Beecham Road, West Reading, on June 29, 2006, where they had been living since 1968. Opening the Crown's case, prosecutor Paul Reid said: “It is quite extraordinary that someone can meet death in circumstances of such appalling quality in the 21st Century." He told the court Pottinger had been out drinking and gambling on the day his wife died after months of suffering.
